What Saudi Arabia requires
All pilgrims aged 1 and over travelling for Hajj or Umrah must show proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination:
- given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia
- valid for 5 years with the conjugate vaccine used in the UK
- on a certificate showing the vaccine name and type, stamped by the provider
We give the vaccine and your certificate in the same visit.

- Routine vaccines: make sure MMR and diphtheria, tetanus and polio are up to date.
- Hepatitis B: worth considering, particularly because of head shaving during the rituals.

When to book
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before you travel, and no later than 10 days before arrival.
Umrah is year-round and busiest around Ramadan. For Hajj, book in the spring.

Hajj and Umrah questions
Is the Meningitis ACWY vaccine compulsory for Umrah as well as Hajj?
Yes. Saudi Arabia requires proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination for pilgrims aged 1 and over travelling for Hajj or Umrah.
How long before travel do I need the vaccine?
It must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia. We recommend seeing us 4 to 6 weeks before you travel, so there's time for any other vaccines you need.
How long is the certificate valid?
The Meningitis ACWY conjugate vaccine used in the UK is accepted for 5 years. If you've had it within the last 5 years, bring your certificate and we'll check whether you need another dose.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. We provide a certificate showing the vaccine name and type, stamped by the pharmacy, at the same appointment.
Can children have it?
Yes. The requirement applies to everyone aged 1 and over, so children travelling with you will need it too. Our pharmacist will advise at the consultation.
What else should I think about?
Saudi Arabia recommends the flu vaccine for Hajj. It's also worth making sure your routine vaccines, such as MMR and diphtheria, tetanus and polio, are up to date, and asking about hepatitis B. Our pharmacist will go through what's right for you.
